Our Process

We want to advance the Namibian wool industry with ethical production methods and, in the process, share the Swakara wool story and our sustainable journey with the world. Swakara sheep is a specific breed of Karakul sheep, only found in the south of Namibia. The wool is naturally coated in lanolin to protect sheep from the harsh environment, making it an excellent fiber for weaving durable rugs that will last a lifetime.

The wool’s natural tones vary from white, cream, grey, and chocolate. Keeping these colours separate, blending them in the spinning process, or using weaving patterns creates endless possibilities when designing these carpets.

We oversee every step of the process, from shearing the sheep, washing, carding, spinning the wool, to the final product, ensuring a circular economy.

We build our own looms for custom designed carpets, you can specify exact dimensions for your needs. The larger the carpet the more the wool and warp fibre pull on their own accord during the weaving process. Therefor any rug over 3 m in length is subject to a tolerance of up to 3% along the width margin.

The use of the 7 natural colours of the swakara wool may result in minor irregularities in colour, we don’t see this as flaws but rather evidence of a hand crafted one of a kind carpet.

CLEANING AND CARE

Wool is a natural fibre, therefore your carpet will react to your climate, but fibres will settle.

Due to their size carpets will arrive folded for transport, resulting in crease lines which will settle in a couple of days. The smell of wool will fade in a week or two.

Soak stains with room temperature tap water and dab with cloth, for serious staining, have it professionally cleaned.
